Hoop house and stuff at URG, taken by my lovely friend Vanessa, another intern at the farm! |
Soooooooo, this blog has been depressingly dormant for the past few months and for that I do apologize. See the thing is, I've been spending a lot of time working on myself, my beliefs, and my philosophy as it pertains to food and that has made it difficult for me to post and keep up with my blog in any sort of consistant manner. Since my last post I started and finished working a at food Co-op, The Swarthmore Food Co-op, which is a local cooperatively owned food market located in Swarthmore, Pa dedicated to selling local and sustainably produced foods; I have volunteered with Mill Creek Urban Farm in Philadelphia helping with upkeep and small farm tasks; and I have lived and interned at the Utility Research Garden in Jones Creek, TX. From these experiences, I have dramatically altered my conception of fresh and local as well as my attitude towards meat and dairy. Consequently, my food philosophy has changed quite a bit and I also have a renewed interest in keeping up with this blog albeit in a slightly altered format.
From this point forward, I will only be publish recipes and the occasional expose about a farm that I either work on or visit. The recipes may even include eggs and dairy so long as it is vegetarian and sustainably raised (though I do not intend for that to become the focus of this blog). If you are interested in my growing ventures or whats going on in the Philly area with regards to the food scene...I will direct you to my other blog site(s) in a short time. Also, I will be tweaking my posts to feature SEASONAL FOODS and the FARMERS that grow them. I will no longer source my food from a place that I cannot identify.* Each item that I use will identify its farm/location of origin, its method of production (Organic, IPM, Conventional, Sustainable), its distance traveled from farm to plate, and the cost of the item to me.
Again, my apologies for the dormancy of this blog and I will begin posting new, fun, delicious and happy farmy recipes ASAP!
*An exception to this rule will be bulk commodities such as flour, sugar, whole grains, pastas etc., though I will make a conscious effort to use sparingly.
